Getting to know the Millennial workspace
Who millennials are and what are the challenges in their workspace?
05:17Getting to know the Millennial workspaceWe know you are busy. We created this audio guide to help you deal with one of the main challenges in the post-covid era – the recruiting of Millennials, and provide some guidance around the concept and methods of social recruiting.
This automatic audio was recorded by Playter by Summurai. I’m Sam and I’ll be your host.
Ready to get started?Let’s start by asking who exactly are Millennials and what represents them?
There is an abundance of information out there about the Millennial Generation, aka Generation Next or Generation Y. But who really makes up this diverse, constantly on the move, constantly in the know generation? According to the nonpartisan fact tank, Pew Research Center, Millennials are those born since 1981. And as of yet, no chronological end point has been set for this generation. In the United States alone, there are approximately 80 million Millennials, 25% of the population. These numbers make Millennials the largest generation in US history, compared to Generation X with 48 million. Of these 80 million, 32 million are minorities, making this generation one of the most diverse generations to date.Of adult Millennials, those that are 18-33 years old, 26% are married. How does that compare to other generations? When Generation X was this age, 36% were married, and 65% of Baby Boomers during these ages.1 The smaller percentage of married Millennials compared to previous generations might also be one of the reasons why more than 14% of the beyond college age Millennials, those that are 24 years plus, still live at home with their parents, and 51% of the college age Millennials, 18-23, have permanent residence with their parents.
There are many reasons why the Millennial Generation might be putting marriage off to a later age than generations before them, one such reason might be because they are spending more and more time on their education. 54% of all Millennials have some college experience and 19% of all Millennials are college graduates. Of the beyond college age Millennials, 1 in 3 are college graduates.
Millennials are the first always-connected Generation.
Since the time they were born, Millennials have had more access to the rest of the world than the generations before them. Even for the older Millennials, many had personal computers in their homes growing up or took a computer class as early as elementary school. They even had access to the World Wide Web at a young age.Millennials are the “first tech-native” and “always connected” generation with mobile phones and the Internet at their fingertips. In fact, they are so connected that 8 in 10 admit to sleeping with their cell phone, which 94% of the entire generation own.1 Most Millennials are so connected to their cell phones that they check them 10 times an hour on average and send 20 texts in 24 hours. Many admit that they would rather text than actually speak on their phones because it is just easier, and many think that technology helps people use their time better. According to Zipcar’s annual Millennial survey, 40% of Millennials believe that losing their phone would be a bigger hardship than losing their car.
Millennials are very well connected on social media; Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, Google+, etc. 81% of all Millennials are on Facebook and they average 250 friends, making them connected at all times. 55% of this generation access their social networks on a daily basis of which, 26% visit once a day and 29% visit multiple times a day, 1 for an average of 37 minutes a day.
Millennials are so connected by their social platforms and text that most prefer to communicate with their friends via those platforms instead of traditional phone calls. Many can have full conversations via text or on their Twitter feed. They are often willing to give reviews to all their followers, good and bad, in just 140 characters or less, instantly. And if something or someone can’t be found in their social network, they often move on to the next best thing. If it doesn’t exist on social media, it doesn’t exist to a Millennial.
Let’s stop for a second.
